How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF

A thesis, a report or a bundle of documents is hard to discuss or print when the pages are not numbered. Adding numbers should not need a desktop PDF editor.

Quick answer

Pick where the numbers go, choose a format like "1", "Page 1" or "1 of 12", set the starting page if needed, and download.

Step by step

  1. Open PDF Page Numbers.
  2. Drop in your PDF.
  3. Use the grid to choose the position, for example bottom-center or top-right.
  4. Pick a numbering style, and set the starting page if you have a cover or contents page.
  5. Click "Add page numbers" and download the file.

Tips

  • Merge your documents first with Merge PDF, then number once so the numbers run through the whole file.
  • If the pages already have a footer or header, choose a different spot so the numbers do not overlap.
  • For documents that will be printed, "1 of 12" makes a missing page easy to spot.

Good to know

The numbers are stamped onto each page as text, so they also work on scanned PDFs. Your PDF is processed on your device and is not uploaded.
