How to Add a Watermark to a PDF

You want a PDF to say DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL before you share it, or you want your logo on a proposal. Most tools either need an account or upload your document first.

Quick answer

Choose a text or logo watermark, set opacity, rotation and placement, and download the stamped PDF.

Step by step

  1. Open PDF Watermark.
  2. Drop in your PDF.
  3. Choose the "Text watermark" tab to type your own text, or "Image / logo watermark" to upload a transparent PNG.
  4. Set the opacity and rotation with the sliders. A 45-degree angle gives the classic diagonal stamp.
  5. Choose "Centered" for one stamp per page or "Tiled" for a repeating pattern, then click "Add watermark".

Tips

  • Subtle but readable works best. An opacity of roughly 20 to 40 percent keeps the page readable and the stamp visible.
  • Use a PNG with a transparent background for logos, so no white box appears.
  • Centered suits a status mark. Tiled covers more of the page and is harder to crop out.
  • Check one text-heavy page of the result before you send the file.

Good to know

A watermark labels a document. It does not hide what is underneath, so remove anything that must stay private instead of covering it. The watermark is added to the page itself, so keep your original file for yourself. Your PDF is processed on your device and is not uploaded.
