PNG vs JPG vs WebP: Which Image Format Should You Use?

Pick the wrong format and an image is either blurry, much too large, or has an ugly white box around it. The three common formats are good at different things.

Quick answer

PNG for graphics and transparency, JPG for photos that must open everywhere, WebP for small files on modern websites.

Step by step

  1. Open Image Format Convert.
  2. Drop in your JPG, PNG, GIF or WebP images. You can add several.
  3. Choose the output format (PNG, JPEG or WebP) and adjust the quality slider if you want.
  4. Click "Convert Images". A single file downloads directly, and several files come as a ZIP.

Tips

  • Convert from the original, not from an already converted copy. Each lossy conversion can cost a little quality.
  • Turning a JPG into a PNG does not improve it. It only makes the file larger.
  • If someone must open the image in older software, choose JPEG.

PNG

Lossless and supports transparency. Best for logos, screenshots and graphics with sharp edges. Files are usually larger.

JPG

Small files and supported almost everywhere. Best for photos. It does not support transparency, so a transparent background becomes white, or a color you choose before converting.

WebP

A modern format that gives small files and supports transparency. Great for websites, as long as the place you send it to accepts WebP.
