How to Sign a PDF on Windows 10 or 11

Windows does not come with a dedicated PDF signing app, but you do not need to install one. You can sign in your browser in under a minute, with a mouse, a touchpad, a pen or a touchscreen. Here are your options and how to get a signature that looks good.

Quick answer

Open PDF Sign in Edge, Chrome or Firefox. Draw your signature with the mouse, touchpad or pen and press "Use this signature". Choose your PDF, click where the signature goes, resize it, and save the signed PDF to your Downloads folder.

Three ways to sign on Windows

OptionGood forKeep in mind
PDF Sign in your browserAny PC, no install; several signatures and initials on different pagesVisual signature only
Microsoft Edge (Draw)A quick scribble when the PDF is already open in EdgeFreehand ink is harder to keep neat and to size
Adobe Acrobat Reader (Fill & Sign)People who already have Reader installedNeeds the app; some options need an Adobe account

Step by step in the browser

  1. Open PDF Sign. Edge is already on every Windows 10 and 11 PC, so you can use it.
  2. Draw your signature in the box. Pick the ink colour first if you want blue.
  3. Press "Use this signature".
  4. Choose the PDF from File Explorer, or drag it from a folder onto the page.
  5. Click the signature line. Drag the green dot to move the signature and the corner dot to resize it.
  6. Need initials on other pages? Use Next and click on each page.
  7. Save the signed PDF. It goes to your Downloads folder.

Mouse, touchpad, pen or touchscreen?

  • Pen or touchscreen (Surface and other 2-in-1 laptops): the most natural result. Sign as you would on paper.
  • Mouse: hold the button and draw slowly. Several short strokes look better than one fast one.
  • Touchpad: the hardest. Draw large and simple, then shrink it on the page. A simplified signature often looks more natural than a shaky full one.

Not happy with it? Press "Clear" and draw again. Nothing is placed until you choose to use it.

Sending the signed PDF

Attach the file from your Downloads folder in Outlook, Gmail or your company's portal. If the attachment is too big, shrink it with Compress PDF; the guide to compressing a PDF for email explains the settings. Rename the file first, for example Contract_Signed_2026-10-23.pdf, so the receiver can find it later.

Found a mistake before signing?

Sign last. If you need to type your details first, use PDF Form Fill. If the document itself has a wrong date, name or amount, fix the text with Edit PDF before you sign. Edit PDF is a Pro tool, and it is the one tool here that uploads your file. The upload is scanned for malware, processed in isolated memory and not stored. The $2 pass on the pricing page gives 72 hours of Pro and does not renew.

What this signature is, and is not

PDF Sign adds a visual signature, like ink on paper. It does not add a digital certificate or an audit trail. That is fine for most letters, forms and everyday agreements. If a contract asks for a certificate-based digital signature, use a signing service that provides one.

Try it now: PDF Sign. Free, no signup, and your file stays on your PC.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sign a PDF on Windows without Adobe?

Yes. Open PDF Sign in any browser, draw your signature and place it on the page. Microsoft Edge can also draw on a PDF. Neither needs Adobe.

How do I sign with a touchpad?

Draw slowly with one finger, keep the signature simple and make it larger than you need. Then resize it on the page by dragging the corner.

Is a drawn signature legally valid?

A drawn signature is a visual signature, like signing with a pen. Many everyday documents accept it, but some contracts and official filings require a certificate-based digital signature. Check what the receiver accepts.

Is my PDF uploaded when I sign it?

No. PDF Sign works in your browser, so the PDF stays on your computer.
